Are you moving before the start of the school year? From hiring professional movers to help with the heavy lifting to the practical aspects of moving with children, take a look at the steps that can help to make this process easier for everyone in your household.

Hire Moving Services Contractors

More specifically, hire a contractor well in advance of your move. It isn't always easy to fit extra activities into your family's busy schedule—even something major, such as a move. Between summer camps, soccer games, dance classes, swimming lessons, playdates, and pre-school-year tours or orientations, you may only have a few days open for your move. The earlier you schedule a moving service, the more likely it is that you'll get the date and time you want.

Even though you could take a do-it-yourself approach to the move, this is often difficult with children. The lifting, carrying, and transporting involved in a move may require you to take your attention away from your children. This means a DIY move could take significantly longer than a contractor-assisted move or you may need to spend extra money on the cost of a babysitter.

Pack School Supplies Separately

Did you already do back-to-school shopping for your children? Do you have leftover notebooks, binders, pens, and pencils from last year? Your children will need these items almost immediately after you move into your new home.

If you pack school supplies in boxes or bins with other everyday items, it could take longer to find these essential items. Avoid lengthy post-move find-and-seek sessions looking for school supplies with a specialized strategy. Separate everything before you pack. Place the school supplies in one sturdy plastic bin or use your child's backpack to move these items.

Remove Old School-Related Items

Now that you know how and where to pack next year's school supplies, you're ready to tackle last year's stash. Remove unused or old school-related items before you pack or move. These could include old school assignments, used notebooks, pencils sharpened past the point of use, dried-up markers, or crayon nubs.

Keep Important Documents With You

Does the school require a vaccination record, printed emergency forms, or any other documents? Keep these items safe during the move and bring them with you. Pack important school-related documents in one file folder. If you have more than one child, create a folder for each student. Avoid mid-move losses and place all of the folders together in one larger file or another container.
